With the price of food at the grocery store we need to store it properly. To make salad greens last until we can finish eating them and before they turn slimy, keep reading. We like to buy the big bags of salad greens because they are a better value, and my husband eats salad every day.
The trick to making them last longer is to give them room to breathe. They are usually packed tightly making no room for air to circulate which causes them to wilt and then turn slimy.
When you get home, pour the entire container of lettuce into a large bowl. Toss the leaves with your hands, picking out any wilted or bad ones, so they are loose and not packed. Pour them into two containers, without packing them. Lay a sheet of paper towel on top of the lettuce in each container to absorb any excess moisture.
Because lettuce can go bad quickly, pour the lettuce into another bowl daily and throw away any that are beginning to wilt, then place them back in the refrigerator. Following these steps will keep your lettuce leaves edible for a much longer time.
